In these two works, deeply rooted in elemental symbolism, the artist draws upon his own experience of migration from Colombia to Spain, his second home. They represent some of the earliest works in which the foundations of his distinctive pictorial language began to emerge.
The paper boat evokes the experience of countless migrants who set out carrying childhood dreams — dreams of beginning again, of building something new, of reaching beyond what they have known. Yet migration is a complex and often misunderstood process. The iconic feet appear adrift, without a shore or solid ground in which to take root once more. The golden sea becomes the waters of being: a symbolic space where uncertainty and possibility coexist.
Alongside it, the yellow paper aeroplane recalls the emotional freedom of childhood, when a few simple folds were enough to create the possibility of flight. We looked upwards without wondering how far it might travel; what mattered was simply that it could fly. Here, reason becomes the force that folds and shapes the mind, preparing it to move towards its purpose.
Together, the two works speak of departure and possibility, of uprooting and aspiration — of the fragile yet persistent human impulse to imagine another horizon and move towards it.
